About the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline
Since 2005, the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline has provided free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, across the United States. Since its inception, the Lifeline has engaged in a variety of initiatives to improve crisis services and advance suicide prevention via phone, online chat, social media and its website.
The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is supported by a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), and administered by Vibrant Emotional Health, a not-for-profit organization that addresses mental health needs in New York City and across the nation. Vibrant Emotional Health’s programs span a wide range of mental health support initiatives, including NYC’s LifeNet, the NFL Life Line, the national Disaster Distress Helpline, and the Veterans Mental Health Coalition.
